By the end of the 48 hour period, they had constructed several anti-aircraft and anti-ship positions overlooking the shores of the islands. The nationalists refused, and the colonists managed to win widespread support in order to raise a significant militia of 35,000 rebels- they quickly put the new numbers to work in fortifying positions. Upon seizing and overthrowing the government, the mainland condemned their actions and issued an ultimatum they were to stand down, withdraw from the capitols of both colonies, and return any stolen property within 48 hours. The initial colonial response was lackluster to contain the violence and the situation grew to the point that most pro-government sentiment on the islands was quashed and colonial authority had been thrown to the wind. Hostilities erupted as merely an escalation of widespread agitation among right-wing groups over Trenakan and Colonial legislature paramilitary and militias were raised before seizing government buildings in both the Kupferland Islands and Richting Atoll. A majority of the battles occurred in major naval engagements off the Richting Atoll, air raids, and land battles (as well as severe bombardment) on the Kupferlands. Although two separate movements, the insurgents in both islands had similar goals they were to break off from the apparently oppressive mainland and form governments better suited to their views and interests. The situation escalated into an international conflict when a fourteen-nation coalition came to the aid of Trenaka, pitted against the officially rogue fleet of Dernel, discrete support of a Cossack company, and the open support of Crysuko.
